Treatment using physical manipulation of soft-tissue muscles of the body isn’t a new thing. Massage therapies have been used for hundreds of centuries and even predates recorded history. It still remains one of the most effective ways to manage anxiety, alleviate stress, improve relaxation and sleep, promote proper blood circulation, and more. Massage therapy is not just a science, it is an art made up of a collection of different techniques that are designed to have specific effects on the body. Not all massage therapies, however, are the same. In this article, we have outlined seven effective massage techniques that can cater for whatever needs you may have. If you ever happen to be in or visit Dharamshala, you could book a stay at Rakkh, one of the best adventure resorts in india, and enjoy a massage session that offers all of these seven techniques, based on what’s best for you.
This technique uses circular rotating motion which is applied on muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bone. Compression and squeezes are applied rhythmically at a controlled speed to achieve the desired result. It is done using different parts of the hand such thumbs and palms, hence the names – thumb kneading and palm kneading.
2. Longitudinal Gliding
This is a technique that is considered basic by many but is very effective for improving circulation. It uses pressure applied in the direction that the blood flows and can reduce swelling (and inflammation) by dissipating fluids from injury sites. Longitudinal gliding is also very effective for stiff muscles.
3. Trigger Point Therapy
No, there are no guns involved in this technique. This bodywork massage technique uses applied pressure on soft muscles to neutralize pain and alleviate muscular dysfunction in various parts of the body. Trigger points include muscular knots and other centres of muscular hyperactivity.
4. Myofascial Releases
Myofascial tissues are tough membranes cover, support, and connect muscles (and organs) together. Discomfort in the body can be caused by stress on skeletal muscles or connective tissues bound by a tightened fascia. Myofascial release technique is used to alleviate muscle pain, improve mobility, and ease lymphatic circulation.
5. Swedish Massage
Swedish massage is quite popular as a massage technique and is known to be the best amongst all bodywork technique. This technique applies pressure on muscles using friction, petrissage, tapping, percussion, vibration, effleurage, long strokes, and shaking. And yes, it was devised in Sweden.
6. Compression Massage
This massage technique is effective in its own right. But it is majorly used a “preparatory” technique to warm the body up for a specific and deeper massage therapy like deep tissue massage. It triggers blood flow to the area where the compression is administered. Compression massage is mainly used in sport massage.
7. Cross-Fibre Friction Massage
This massage technique is administered on large muscles groups, connective tissue, and/or site-specific muscles. It is used to build a broadening and stretching effect. Administered together with deep transverse friction technique, it can lower adhesions and aid repair of scarred tissues.
