An hour’s drive from Rakkh lies the beautiful, ancient rock temple at Bajinath. Baijnath Mandir dates back to 1204 A.D. and was built on an existing shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The ‘Nagara’ style of temple, which is highly influenced by the Orissan style, is unique in Himachal Pradesh. During the Shivaratri Festival, which takes place in February/March, thousands of pilgrims gather at the temple to worship at the shivling. A colourful, buzzing event and a treat for photographers.
A wonderful alternative way to arrive at Bajinath is to take the local train, which travels through scenic countryside, offering a chance to interact with smiling, local people – the journey from our local station to Bajinath is less than an hour and will set you back just Rs15!
