Triund, a crown jewel of Dharamshala, is popular for its trek trails that offer a panoramic view of Dhauladhar mountain on one side and Kangra valley on the other. It is a mountain ridge easily accessible from villages of Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj, Bahgsu, and Dharamkot. The track is open for most part of the year except during heavy snowfall in January and February. That said, you need to plan ahead of your visit to Triund, as there is only one track straight to the peak and back. To help, the post outlines a trekking itinerary to prepare you for the hike.
The Track Length
The Triund is a day affair with easy to moderate hiking trails. If you are planning to spend some time up on the peak, you can rent a tent and camping gear from McCleod Ganj or Bahsgu. Though you will find a couple of huts at the top, but the space is available on first come and first basis. Also, if you are planning a one day hike, you must reach the trailhead before 9am so that you are back before it is dark. Starting your hike early also gives you ample time to enjoy the beauty of Mother Nature and click pictures.
How to Reach the Trailhead
For one day hike, it is advisable to take a taxi to reach the trailhead, which is also known as Gallu Devi temple. Or you can walk 7km uphill from McCleod Ganj; 5km uphill from Bhagsu; and 3 Km from Dharamkot to reach the starting point. That said, if you are planning to go up and come back in one day, walking uphill till tailgate is a time taking expedition.
Supplies you Need to Fuel your Body
Though there are many stops on the way, all stops serve the usual packaged food, such as chips, biscuits etc. Or if you are up for some hot maggie, you will end up splurging 300 bucks per serve. It is, therefore, advisable to pack food, such as sandwiches, energy bars, snacks, and fruits before starting the hike. Also, take a couple of water bottles along, as water bottles up there are double the standard price.
It is better to be prepared beforehand rather than feeling sorry later. Here is a checklist of basic essentials you would require during the hike.
- Trekking poles as they reduce the impact of hiking on knee joints and leg muscles
- Sunscreen to protect your skin from direct sun rays
- A hat to keep sun off your face
- Hand sanitizer, toilet paper and wet wipes
- Waterproof jacket
- Camera, smartphone, and a power bank
