McLeodGanj, popularly known as “Little Lhasa” or “Dhasa” is a suburb of Dharamshala in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, India. McLeodGanj is home to a large population of Tibetans in India. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh that attract both Indian and International tourists. As McLeodGanj is home to the Dalai Lama, it is home to more than a few spiritual attractions. That, however, does not mean that McLeodGanj is limited to places of spirituality only, there are some other interesting places, too. If you are planning a trip to McLeodGanj, we list four such tourist attractions in and around McLeodGanj, that you shouldn’t miss.
Tsuglagkhang or Dalai Lama’s Temple
Tsuglagkhang is the residence of his holiness, the Dalai Lama. While his private residence might be out of your reach, you can visit the temples, shrines, souvenir stores and the Tibetan museum that are housed inside this huge complex. The iconic temple also has a massive gilded Buddha statue, along with two other smaller statues of Chenrezig and Guru Rinpoche.
Saint John in the Wilderness Church
The church was constructed in the year 1852 for the British civilians and wives of army officers who settled in the army cantonments in McLeodGanj and Dharamshala. The church was dedicated to St John, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. The most intriguing thing about the church is the fact that except for the church’s bell tower, the entire church remained undamaged when the Kangra earthquake hit the area in 1905. If you like places that are less crowded and peaceful, then Saint John’s church is the place to be.
Highly revered by the Hindus and the Gorkhas, the beautiful Bhagsunath Temple attracts several devotees and tourists every year. Located at a height 1770m above sea level, the temple is a tourist’s paradise as it is surrounded by lush greenery and beautiful pools. Legend has it that the temple was built by two rulers from the Gorkha community. Another legend says that the temple was built by King Bhagsu to calm Nag Devta, who was angry because the King stole water from Nag Dal Lake.
Popularly known as the crown jewel of Dharamshala, Triund is a beautiful ridge located in the laps of Dhauladhar mountains, around 10 kms from McLeodGanj. Triund is a popular trekking spot that’s perfect for beginners as it is an easy trek that can be accomplished by almost all age groups. The only difficulty one may encounter is during the last one kilometer that would require some bit of toil. The last one kilometer of trek has 22 curves and is, therefore, known as “22 curves.”
